Norwegian ski touring

Day 3 Aksel and Kjetil showing how it should be done

Meet report 17 – 20th March 2026, 4 days back country skiing  in Norway. This was a multinational tour – two Norwegians, two from the UK one from Sweden and one large dog, Nico

The ski tour took place in  the Jotunheimen National Park staying at three DNT Huts – Torfinnsbu , Fonsbu, and Yksendalsbu

The route

The first day consisted of some flat skiing in poor weather along the Bygdin lake, ditto the second day continuing along the lake with snow rain and hail. We had the objective of getting to the Fonsbu hut before the forecast high winds, which we did, meeting on the way a dog sledger from Yorkshire

After a great stay at the fully serviced  Fonsbu hut including being serenaded over dinner by the guardian,  day 3 involved some significant climbing and descent, the latter resulting in many falls from the UK contingent, a big plus though was that the weather changed and we were treated to some lovely views between Vennisstoldalen and Drylleberget. During our descent into Yksendalen Valley, Niko was  treated to a ride in the pulk – a first for him as he had given up because of his paws  continually punching through the snow crust

Day 4 was a mixed bag – starting with some flat skiing on lake Olefjorden, however after passing the dam at Ole we were again challenged by some steep ups and rolling downs, causing more  falls by the UK contingent.  This last day however brought with it some great weather and views, which we all enjoyed, at one point sitting on the lake ice for  lunch

The meet was well organised by Kjetil and Mike, a big thank you goes to the former for organising the food at the huts and to the Tveranger’s generally for our stay at Bietostolen, it was a super

Day 4

Attending : Kjetil Tveranger, Rebecca Humphreys, Mark Rothwell, Aksel Tveranger, Kevin Brown and Michael Smith ( in spirit only as he stayed in Beitsolen throughout the 4 day tour due to illness).
