Scottish Winter Meet, Glen Etive

10-13 February 2024. We return to Inbhir Fhaolain, the Grampian Club’s hut in Glen Etive after a gap of seven years. Derek Bush used to be the doyen of Etive meet leaders; Chris Hilton has ably stepped up in his place and will be providing the traditional haggis. Sadly (or happily) he can’t play the pipes. The hut provides basic but warm facilities for 13 with plenty of room for camping in the grounds. Mattresses are provided but no pillows. Electricity is on a £1 meter and water needs to be sourced from the adjacent river. The cost will be £7.50 per night (£4.50 for campers).

The hut is ideally placed to give access to the Glencoe and Glen Etive hills. Within 10km are the 1000m+ summits of Bidean nam Bian, Buachaille Etive Mor, Meall a’Bhuiridh, Ben Starav and Stob Coir’an Albannaich. The scope for walking and winter climbing is almost endless.

Inbhir Fhaolain, Glen Etive. OS GR: NN158 507

The hut is situated 7 miles from the junction of the Tyndrum – Glencoe road and 1 km beyond Dalness (The “Big House”).

  1. I’m planning to remain in the area until Thursday morning; no firm plans yet but happy to discuss options once we’re at Inbhir Fhaolain if anyone else is planning to extend their trip.

    • A possibility but I may then require a lift back to Morpeth. SMC’s Lagangarbh should be bookable. Weather forecast would need to be good.

  2. Seeing the Club invite to the Glen Etive meet filled me with nostalgia ! Can’t remember when the Club first had a meet there but I think they went there every year for some years. One sticks in my mind. In 1977 a number of us did the Aonach Eagach in perfect conditions, (Chapman, Smith FD, Burfitt, Jones). Conditions were so good that one member of the party suggested we returned along the ridge but the Clachaig won out ! Time so gladly spent !

  3. Thanks, Tim, for posting the photograph of Albert and myself ……..pleased you caught him on one of his better days !

  4. My last trip over the ridge was with Ron Goodwin and Eddie Edwards. Eddie on the Munro chase (one of many including the Inpin.) Anybody remember them? Good conditions
Climate Change and wet conditions pushed the Feb meet to other venue’s. Nice to return.
David Smith and I had a ford Cortina. Same door (FS249)and ignition key. Just leave one car at each end. no time pressure and meeting to exchange keys.
Last trip up Starav with Derek Smithson, too much for Derek
